I hold doctoral degrees in mathematics from UC Berkeley and Paris. After specializing in model theory and teaching mathematics in various universities in and around Paris, I moved to positions in philosophy in Lille and then Nanterre. I am now the professor of philosophy of science and epistemology at
Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV)∞. I was for many years co-director and then briefly director of CREA (Centre de recherche en épistémologie appliquée, Ecole polytechnique and CNRS, Paris). I stepped down as founding head of the Department of Cognitive Studies at Ecole normale supérieure, Paris, a few years ago. In 2007 I was elected to senior membership in the
Institut universitaire de France∞.
I belong to Rationalités contemporaines, a research group within Paris-Sorbonne, and am an associate member of the
Institut d’histoire et de philosophie des sciences et des techniques (IHPST)∞, a CNRS-Paris I research institute. I am in charge of the
master’s program in philosophy of science and epistemology∞ at Paris IV, and head the scientific committee of the
master’s program in cognitive science∞ co-administered by Ecole normale supérieure, EHESS and Université René Descartes (Paris V).
I was a founding Board member of the
European Society for Philosophy and Psychology (ESPP)∞. I was the founding President of the
Société de philosophie des sciences∞, which is holding its Third Congress,
SPS-09∞ in Paris, Nov, 12-14; I head its program committee. I recently served as vice-president of the Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science (DLMPS) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science.
A philosopher of science, I write mostly on the foundations of cognitive science and its relation to the sciences of man; my work thus extends now to social epistemology. I am also interested in applying philosophy of science and cognitive science to areas of broad human concern. Some details and pointers to research projects are found
here.
