A philosopher of science, I write mostly on the foundations of cognitive science and its relation to the sciences of man; my work thus extends now to social epistemology. I am also interested in applying philosophy of science and cognitive science to areas of broad human concern. Some details and pointers to research projects are found here.

I hold doctoral degrees in mathematics from UC Berkeley and Paris. After specializing in model theory and teaching mathematics in various universities in and around Paris, I moved to positions in philosophy in Lille and then Nanterre. I am now the professor of philosophy of science and epistemology at Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV)∞. I was for many years co-director and then briefly director of CREA (Centre de recherche en épistémologie appliquée, Ecole polytechnique and CNRS, Paris). I stepped down as founding head of the Department of Cognitive Studies at Ecole normale supérieure, Paris, a few years ago. In 2007 I was elected to senior membership in the Institut universitaire de France∞.
